An Afro Latino is someone who is of African descent and either born in a Spanish speaking Latin American country or who has at least one parent who is of African descent and Latino descent according to the
Unidos US in Afro-Latinos in 2017: A demographic and socio-economic snapshot report.
We extend that definition to someone of both African descent and Latino parentage in the U.S.
The Soy Maravillosa Initiative was founded by Dr. Jackeline Biddle Richard, an Afro Latina Mother, Nurse, Lawyer, Educator, & Leader who was motivated by her own journey of Afro-Latinidad, Colorism, Racism, & Empowerment .
Her goal is to inspire other Afro-Latinas as they navigate this intersection of African Descent, Race, and
Latino Heritage.
The purpose of Soy Maravillosa is to Raise Awareness, Educate, and Connect Communities about the Afro-Latino experience from a historical perspective of African descendants in the Americas and Caribbean to current dialogue and understanding about Afro-Latinx diaspora in all spaces.
